Research + Final

So I decided to stick with my final idea of mixing spontaneity and a "somewhat acid trip" and combine it with research into the gray area of subliminal advertising and back masked audio tracks. I made a flash animation with some crazy foreign language and dancing crabs; what else can you want? I will explain it in class, but it features some key concerns of the FFC in 1985 with a little bit of daft punk love.

New Media Scavenger Hunt!!!

What is New Media? Plenty of definitions out there, but I truly feel New Media is the feeling of now; a visual representation of the way in which our society views technological advances. I would argue that as time moves, so does the current status of society and its perception of art and collaborative communication. As technology advances, new methods are developed to express this collaborative communication. New Media is just that; means of expressing collaborative communication through any given paradigm of technology.

New Media is basically expressed through the term innovation. Most state that innovation is presenting something new to this world; as such, it makes sense that New Media is an essence of Innovation; however, it is specifically related to technological innovation regarding communication and collaboration. Creativity is obviously a factor of both of these terms, but this term in itself is too difficult to convey in one essay, so I will simply state that Innovation and an understanding of the current social paradigm are both requirements for a well represented piece of New Media.

My favorite form of New Media in Indianapolis is actually a project several professors at IUPUI are currently working on for Citizens Gas. They are developing a flash based game to educate children on gas safety. The project has wonderfully designed characters and imaginative worlds all based around different parts; earth, city, etc.

Who did it?

Citizens Gas, contracted by IUPUI professors

How did they do it?

Flash game with illustrations and concept art from Mat Powers and Prof. Ludwig

For whom did they do it?

Citizens Gas Corporation and the children of Indiana. An educational tool used to teach gas safety.

How might you be able to use what you learned about this innovative use of new media to help you when doing your final project?

I suppose the main thing I learned from this project is it is all about collaboration and communication. The target audience is the main goal from any project, and our final in this class is no different. Because of this, I am beginning to think my original final project idea is somewhat unfair to our class because it is more of a journey within myself rather than relevant to our class. I want to keep the theme, but I want it to be something that conveys innovation and imagination which can be used for something beneficial in our classroom. More information to come...

Other forms of New Media in Indianapolis:

1. Flash-based video game companies; see Corey's post

2. Three Dimension video game companies; several pioneer companies exist in this realm in Indianapolis, although the profile of these games is rather small and does not seem to appeal to a national market; hopefully things will change.

3. http://www.imamuseum.org/blog/ - The art of the blog has always been a pioneer in New Media, and it is only that much sweeter when it is combined with the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

4. Last but not least; who can forget the Capstone Presentations at IUPUI! This is a major new media event of our city, and I truly believe it will be a core founder of an established New Media industry in Indianapolis; students and interest will surely make or break whether Indianapolis will become a major player in the new media industry.

Quantum Mechanics Cartoon Strip

So the video was pretty interesting. However, I would argue that the thought processes of a quantum molecule not being observed are much more enticing. =)

Response To Class

Given the circumstances, the class last week was pretty interesting. I always enjoy trying to figure out exactly what new media is and how it effects everyone. Susan and the class got into a lot of discussions about what New Media does, and I would like to share what I think.

Ultimately, New Media is an expression for individuals to further the progress of their current state of advance. Human beings, and the world as well, all are in a constant state of foward movement, whether you believe time to be true or not, there is an undeniable reliance on time and the fact that what has happened no longer exists and what has yet to come lies off in the future. We are constantly trying to evolve ourselves and our thinking, and in response, we find new ways of communicating, reacting, and engaging. Ultimately, a creative paradigm emerges for the time, and in that moment this paradigm is new, innovative, and creative. However, because of the undeniable truth that time moves on, this paradigm ultimately shifts as soon as a new technological advance has been established. Thus is the way of the New Media spectrum, and thus is the way of life in general.

New Media encompasses the passion of every generation; it is the willingess to accept his forward change and stay up to date with what is creative and important. New Media will forever be fresh, no matter what paradigm we rest in.

Beth, we love you as a professor and friend. You are an inspiration to all of your students, friends, and faculty. We are here for you to support you in this part of your life. Do not hesitate to ever express what you truly feel, and always be the beautiful person we know you are. We look forward to seeing you in class.

What the Do We Know?

I really enjoyed this movie; considering I am a practicing Catholic, you would think I would try to refute the evidence seen and try to deny what was shown. However, I love quantum mechanics; in my mind, every piece of information that is found further deepens my belief system. I have always been one that believes everyone needs to form their own opinion of the world and its creation over many years of their life. This movie gave many opinions and testimony to the micro-cosmos of our world.

Although I enjoyed the movie, I found a lot of theories that were presented to be a little strange and uncredited. Many of the things presented have an important place in our world today, but I felt some things, such as the water message experiment, did not need to be thrown into the movie, as there has been no proof or true documentation of this experiment. However, the more the movie got into unity and the mechanics of electrons, the more I began to make my own connection behind the meaning of unity and electrons being "small flashing thoughts." This world is a wonderful place; it makes perfect sense that everyone strives to find the meaning behind our existence.

Ultimately this movie makes you think. You wonder about all of the small things that make you who you are. You ponder the makeup of your body and soul. I suppose the only thing that matters is how you treat your life and how you make your day. I find comfort knowing that our being is controlled by something greater than ourselves. I suppose what we do perceive this world to be ultimately makes the unknown that much more special. So cheers to that, and let's move on through this life treating each other with utmost respect, as each person is made up of an existence that deserves much more respect than what is given each and every day. What a beautiful world!

Class on March 23rd

Do I really need to respond to this class with more than three words? hmmmm?

MARY FUCKING ELLEN

hahahahaha.

Interesting class today. I do agree with Beth tho; although our assignments are very interesting, I think we could probably do a bit more thinking in relation to our projects. However, I really do enjoy my "scared shitless" fruit fly picture. Hahaha.

I will be on vacation this next week. During that time, I will try to dig even further into my final project idea and try to pinpoint exactly what I am trying to accomplish, and in the process, make it interesting for the masses. I think my project has some potential; however, it is too broad. I will try to give it a central theme other than different perspectives based on alcohol consumption. I am hoping to give this project an educative edge to indeed come to some goal. More to come in the future, and I look forward to seeing the class when I get back.

PS: Cop cars running over apples with their lights turned on is WIN. So are super heroes made from SPORKS. hahaha.

I did forget to blog about this a bit ago, but I wanted to share it with you all.

Around three weeks ago I was driving down to campus and stuck behind some guy driving down fall creek. This guy was going into the oncoming traffic lanes, back into ours, and into the right lane. I decided to pass this guy, thinking it was a good idea.

We came to a stop light, and I figured it might be a good idea to get in the other lane. As I did this, I watched the drunk driver come flying up on my left, proceeding to slam hard into the van right next to me. After this happened, he took off.

Realize this was happening at around 4pm. I did not call the police, as I did not think quickly on my feet, and sadly, did not want to get tied up in the situation. However, is inconvenience an excuse for preventing harm? Looking back, I know what I should have done.

This all ties into our red-light situation we talked about in class around three weeks ago. STOP FOR THE DAMNED LIGHTS PEOPLE, and DO NOT DRIVE DRUNK. It is rediculous, it kills, and it makes you look like an ass. This coming from me. Pfft. I need to take my own advice.

See you all soon!

Malathion: Change We Can Believe In

Alright, so my word from Beth was Malathion; yaaaaaa. Well it turns out that this word is basically insect pesticide. Originally it was created to kill fruit flies, but it later found it's uses in destroying mosquitos. Anyways, we were supposed to do something with my word "change" and Beth's word "Malathion." So I figured I'd make a somewhat Godzilla-like picture.

Ahhhhhhhh! Run from the pesticide! Those silly talking bugs!
